Whale Shark

The whale shark is the biggest of all species. Adults are at least 25 feet (8 m) long and they can be up to 45 feet (14 m) in length. They can also weigh up to 30,000 lbs (13,650 kg) which is unbelievable. While it isn’t uncommon for sharks to have rows of teeth, the whale shark has an abundance of them. They can feature between 300 and 350 rows of teeth at a time. Whale Sharks are characterized by a streamlined body with a broad, flattened head. The mouth is very large and on the front of the short snout (rather than below as in most other shark species). The Whale Sharks’ underbelly is white or yellowish and the upper body is grey, bluish or greenish brown with columns of white spots interspersed with light vertical and horizontal bands giving a checkerboard appearance.

Preferring warm waters, whale sharks populate all tropical seas. They are known to migrate every spring to the continental shelf of the central west coast of Australia. The coral spawning of the area's Ningaloo Reef provides the whale shark with an abundant supply of plankton. Although massive, whale sharks are docile fish and sometimes allow swimmers to hitch a ride. They are currently listed as a vulnerable species; however, they continue to be hunted in parts of Asia, such as the Philippines. One unusual aspect of it from other types of sharks is that they entire body has to be used for swimming. It is the slowest swimmer too at a rate of only 3 miles per hour (5 km/h). The whale shark is a filter feeder which is quite interesting for such a large shark. It glides along in the water and takes in water and what all is inside of it. This is a great way for them to get plenty to eat. At the same time it keeps the water clear of various types of debris that can accumulate. They are one of three types of sharks that feed in this manner.

Due to the size of the whale shark it isn’t surprising that females can have up to 300 pups per litter. The eggs grow inside of the mother and then the live pups are expelled into the water. They don’t become sexually mature until they are about 30 years of age which is quite unusual for sharks. However, they do have a life span of approximately 100 years. At birth, the shark is 1.8-2.1 ft (55-64 cm) in length. Males mature at over 19.7 ft (6 m] while females mature at more than 26.2 ft (8 m).
